Ornamental garden building or temple built by the second Duke of Richmond
in 1743 and called after an old French retainer of his grandmother Louise de
Kerouaille, Duchess of Portsmouth. Ascribed by Christopher Hussey to Lord
Burlington or possibly by Roger Morris. It is built of stone said to have
come from the ruins of the tower of the old Parish Church of Hove. Two
storeys. The south side has a projecting portion with a pediment over.
The upper storey has 3 round-headed windows with fancy glazing. Below is
portico with 4 square rusticated windows. On each side of the building is
the figure of a sphinx on a plinth. The entrance on the north side is by
means of an Ionic porch.
