TQ 3024 NW CUCKFIELD SOUTH STREET
(west side)
7/87 No 21 (Ockenden House)
6.4.70 (formerly also Premises
occupied by V E King)
GV II
House. Several builds but appears to be C15 core. Possibly open hall flanked
by high projecting C16 cross-wing to right hand side and Cl7 wing to left with C20
extension to the end of these. Timber-framed building refaced in roughcast, tile
hung, stuccoed, red brick with some exposed frame with plaster infill. Tiled roof.
2 storeys and attics. C15 core is roughcast and has a gablet to the west. 3 C20
casements to first floor. Ground floor has right hand 16-pane sash in moulded
architrave, 2 canted bays and doorcase with flat hood and 6 panelled door. West
wing partly tile hung but some square panel timber-framing is visible in the side
elevation with plaster infill. 2 casements. To the rear is an original diamond
mullioned window. C20 addition to this, not of special interest. The right hand
wing, probably C16, is set end on to the road. The south elevation is stuccoed,
the west elevation is red brick and the east elevation retains box framing with
plaster infill. Large clustered brick chimney stack. Carved wooden barge-board
with pendants. South elevation has two 12-pane sashes with drip-moulds over and
quoins, west elevation has 2 casement windows which, on the ground floor, are triple
in cambered heads and the east elevation has 1 sash and 1 casement. Further brick
wing to rear dated 1869.
