9/209 Stable Cottages and attached
stables, carriage house and
railings, at Hamptworth Lodge

Pair of cottages attached to stable blocks and carriage house, now
workshops. Circa 1870 for George Morrison of Hamptworth Lodge
(q.v.). Flemish bond brick, tiled roofs, brick stacks. Pair of
matching cottages, attached to stables blocks with carriage house
enclosing end of courtyard; U-shaped plan. Cottages are 2-storey,
3-bay. Central projecting bay with elliptical-headed 4-panelled
door, 2-light casements to either side and three 2-light casements
to first floor. Returns have 12-pane sashes to ground floor and
casements to first. Stable blocks attached to rear of cottages;
single storey parallel ranges, planked doors and four 12-pane
sashes to each range, roofs each have two vents with pyramidal
tiled roof with ball finials and louvred vents, brick stacks.
Carriage house, now implement store has double wooden doors and
continuous verandah on cast-iron posts. Entrance side of courtyard
closed by English bond brick wall with good cast-iron spearhead
railings, attached to sides of cottages, double gates with
spearheads.
