5/138 Bridge over Avon Navigation,
to rear of stable Block
II
Foot bridge over former Avon Navigation. Late C18. Irregular bond
brick with limestone dressings. Two round arches with stone
voussoirs and keystones, low cutwaters on both sides, rounded
bricks to parapet and to angled revetment walls on either side.
Heraldic shield in limestone on east face between arches, bears
arms of Bouverie and Marsham, dating the bridge to about 1748;
Jacob Bouverie married Elizabeth Marsham 1741, and became Viscount
Folkestone 1747. The bridge is too low for canal traffic and post-
dates the abandonment of the Navigation in the 1730s.
(Unpublished records of RCHM (England), Salisbury).
