8/269 Bay Stalls
II
Outfield cattle stalls formerly on Common Farm. c.1840. Nine in
local buff brick with stone slate roof. Eight-bays, open fronted
to west. South gable with C20 opening. Principal rafter trusses
with tie and single purlin. Slotted vertical timbers for stall
divisions, 2 animals to 1 stall. Tiles torched. Paved external
forecourt and stream on opposite side. A well maintained example
of a now obsolescent outfield farm building erected on newly
assarted land, once a common feature of the north Wiltshire
countryside.
