Description


A dovecote built in the late C17 or early C18.

MATERIALS: it is constructed of limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, under a hipped, stone-tiled roof with central louvre.

PLAN: rectangular in plan, the dovecote stands at 5m long, 3m wide and 4m high. The building is orientated NE-SW.

EXTERIOR: the building is tall with projecting string course. It features, on its NE elevation, a low rounded-arch doorway with moulded surrounds and plank oak door. On the SW elevation is an oculus window which allowed access for the doves.

INTERIOR: the four walls are lined with ashlar nesting boxes. The roof structure comprises a pair of queen-post trusses and tenoned purlins. A later floor has been inserted into the building, 2.4m above ground level.

History


The dovecote at Easton House stands amongst other agricultural buildings formerly serving the Grade II* Easton House to the east. The dovecote is described as being constructed in the late C17 or early C18.

The dovecote 30m west of Easton House is listed at Grade II* for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as a good and well-preserved example of a late C17 or early C18 dovecote which retains key features including internal nesting boxes, which demonstrate the building's original function;
