6/234 Gate piers at west end of Great
Terrace in gardens at Iford Manor
GV II
Gate piers linked by concave dwarf wall with stone seat, flanking
walls. Gate piers probably early C19, walls c1907 by H.A. Peto.
Square limestone ashlar piers with composite capitals, each
surmounted by Rooke family crest of a rook and wheatsheaf, linked
by concave ashlar dwarf wall and stone seat; the iron gates or
grille were removed by Peto. Rubble stone walls with moulded flat
coping link gate piers to Casita (q.v.) on right and on left are
set with fragments of Italian sculpture. The Rooke family were at
Iford in C19, Peto altered the arrangement between the piers as
part of his remodelling of the Great Terrace.
