History

The first of the bank of kilns were built in the 1870s to serve the quarry immediately to the S. The 1888 Ordnance Survey shows 3 kilns, with 2 more added on the NE side by the time of the 1906 Ordnance Survey.

Exterior

A bank of 5 tall lime kilns (overgrown at the time of inspection), of which the central is set back, built against a steep bank. Battered walls are of rubble stone, except the earlier 2 on the R (W) side which are of rock-faced stone. Draw arches have segmental tunnel vaults.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as an impressive bank of late C19 lime kilns, from a period when the scale of the industry was rapidly expanding.
