History

Second-quarter or mid C17 storeyed farmhouse, probably the successor to the 'Tyddyn-y- Wern Fawr' mentioned in the 'extent of Meirionedd' of 1592. In the C17 Wern Fawr was one of a small group of Quaker farmsteads in the parish. In 1682 several Quaker families formed the 'Meirionedd Adventurers' Company' and in that year emigrated to Pensylvannia where they founded a Quaker colony.

Exterior

Rectangular 2-storey farmhouse of 3-unit lobby entry plan. Of local rubble construction with boulder foundations and medium-steep slate roof; uncoped rubble gable parapet to the R gable, with crude stone kneelers. Tall central chimney with reduced end chimney to the R gable; weathercoursing and plain capping. The present rear elevation was the original front. This has primary entrance off-centre to the R with early C20 part-glazed door. To the L are 2 primary windows with 4-pane C20 casements, with an sympathetically-enlarged 6-pane modern window beyond. The upper floor has two 12-pane, 2-light casements to the L and a plain-glazed window to the far R. Corrugated iron lean-to store to the L gable.

The farmyard-facing elevation has an entrance to the R contained within a modern brick lean-to porch with corrugated metal roof. Adjoining this to the L is a larger breeze-block lean-to. To the L of this the primary block has a broad, shallow lateral outshut with entrance to the L; part-glazed C20 door. To the L of this outshut is an unglazed 4-pane Victorian sash with a catslide dormer to the upper floor above, with modern window; 3 further modern windows to the upper floor at R, with tilting upper casement sections.

Interior

Lobby-entry plan with beamed ceilings to hall and parlour having stopped-chamfered joists and ogee stops to the main beam. Large fireplaces to both rooms, with bracketed early C19 mantleshelves and stopped-chamfered bressummers. Beyond the former parlour is a pantry with slate-lined bin and slate-slab L-shaped surfaces around two sides; C19.

Reasons for Listing

Listed for its special interest as a C17 Quaker farmhouse retaining good original character.
