History

Sir John Nicholl purchased the Merthyr Mawr Estate in 1804 and planned a new country residence away from the old manor house, Merthyr Mawr Hall (now the site of Home Farm). A new site was chosen below Chapel Hill which overlooks the Ogmore valley, where Merthyr Mawr House was built 1806-9. The original road to Merthyr Mawr village was appropriated by Nicholl as the drive to the new house, at the entrance to which New Inn Lodge was built. An architect's drawing of the lodge accompanies a drawing of part of the service range of the house, suggesting that the lodge was designed by Henry Wood. The lodge was completed by 1813 when it is shown on a plan of the Estate.

Exterior

Single-storey lodge of coursed limestone and hipped slate roof with central stone stack. The single-window front faces S to the drive and has a 4-panel door to L and 12-pane hornless sash window to R, both under flat arches. The 2-window side walls have similar sash windows. A boundary wall is attached to the NE angle. An L-shaped projection at the rear was added late C19.

Interior

Modernised internally. The main doorway is now blocked behind the door and entry is through the added rear wing.
