History

Sundial and columnar base, presented by William Butler, of Ty Mawr, Esq. in 1731 'for the use of the parish'. Butler himself died in 1742 and lies buried on the N side of the church beneath a fine sandstone chest-tomb with Memento Mori carving and brass dedication plaque.

Exterior

Columnar sandstone sundial base and engraved brass sundial. The base is octagonal in profile and of skittle form, tapering inwards towards the top; moulded octagonal abacus and wide, octagonal stone plinth. The sundial, some 20cms in diameter, has incised rinceau decoration and a now illegible inscription in Welsh.

Reasons for Listing

Included for its special historic interest as a complete C18 sundial and base, and for its group value with the Parish Church of St. Cynfran.
