Exterior

History: Late C18, but possibly earlier origins. Shown as a 'smithy' on Enclosure award and second edition O.S., possibly taking over the business of the nearby Hen Efail. Sign above open E bay "Pentyrch Smith". Said to have been workshop of a wheelwright in early C20. Western bay maybe an addition and it appears that the roof has been raised - only 1 storey originally.

Exterior: Two storey 2 unit plan, lobby entry house with axial stack and W gable stack with workshop and open cart shed at E end. Two lean-to outshots at rear. Random rubble masonry, whitened throughout. Slate covered roofs, the S slope retaining many old, thick slates. House: 1 tripartite iron framed window with central opening light, 1x4-light timber casement both below eaves. At ground floor 2x4-light timber casements, door is modern, 4 panels half-glazed. Simple, open porch, a cast iron sheet bent to form a pent roof with iron rod supports below with spiralled ends. Workshop and cart shed: 4-light iron-framed casement window at first floor, 4-light timber window at ground floor. Weatherboarded timber frame above cart shed has 2x3-light timber windows and central door, boarded. Between the house and workshop on the N wall is a massive chimney stack thought to be from the smithy.

Interior: Access not possible at time of inspection (October 1995).

Listed as a relatively unaltered example of a rural industrial workshop.
