Erected 1932 in memory of members of the Johnes family of Dolaucothi. The church of St Cynwyl is predominantly C15 and the lychgate is appropriately in the Perpendicular style.
Gabled front of squared rock-faced grey sandstone, ashlar dressings. Steeply pitched stone-tiled roof, wooden soffits, projecting bracketed bargeboards with carved consoles. Wide 4-centred entry, ashlar head with drip. Low paired wooden panelled gates with strap hinges, the upper panels open with spiral twist iron bars. Square Perpendicular two-light window above, label, trefoiled lights, latticed iron panes. Carved gablet above window rising to a crucifix. Rear elevation as front, but without gates.
Pair of earlier square ashlar gate-piers in front of lychgate, moulded stone copings rising to ball finials. Short wide flight of cemented steps in front.
Collarbeam roof, flagstone floor, stone benches. Inscribed stone memorial tablets to left and right.
Well designed lychgate of 1932. Group value with parish church.
