The building originated as a barn probably of C17 date. This was modified to form a carriage shed, probably C18, stables and an attached house was formed, probably earlier C19. The building is now used for raising cattle.
Elevation to yard: random roughly squared rubble with quoins, slate roof. A pair of stable doors under cambered painted brick arches are flanked by multipaned windows under similar arches. On the upper floor 3 square pitching eyes which do not relate to the openings below; to left a rectilinear partially blocked opening, below this a former cart or threshing opening has been blocked. To right is a door to the tack room and an attached house with tall stone and brick chimneys which has a multipaned window to the ground floor and a square multipaned dormer above. Left hand return gable end has blocked ventilation slits and the random rubble has been pointed to resemble coursed masonry. Rear elevation has paired brick arches rising from stone imposts to form a carriage shed. The remainder of the elevation has been pointed as the gable end. To the left the gable end of the house projects forward.
The ceilings have heavy bridging and secondary beams, some probably reused.
Group value with the cruck barn and cowshed, and with Rhual.
Listed as an example of a C17 barn modified in the C18 and C19 to form stables and accommodation for staff.
