Llantrisant or Ynsmaerdy Colliery was established by the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company after World War I. It closed in 1942 following an underground explosion. It was constructed on the efficient modern model developed by the Powell Duffryn company, with a single engine hall containing the main power equipment needed on the surface. The site is a particularly complete and impressive colliery complex, containing the engine hall, workshops and stores, ruined offices, a separate winding engine house, railway lines, tips, a long revetment wall, a reservoir, and an explosives store. It was associated with the planned housing estate at Ynysmaerdy.
The garage building appears to have been used as assembly shops. It is a single-storey gabled building of rendered rubble sandstone with red brick dressings and a slate roof. It is 4 bays long and 2 bays wide. To the E elevation there are 4 tall segmental headed windows with small-paned metal frames, 6 panes by 8. The W elevation is open-fronted with concrete posts and lintels allowing large objects to be carried into the building. There are 2 small windows to the N gable end, with metal framed windows, 4 panes by 5; and another window and a raised doorway to the S gable end.
Listed for group value in this unusually complete and impressive colliery complex.
