History

The mound originated as a Bronze Age burial cairn which was enlarged as a castle motte in the C11. It formed the nucleus of the original estate of Rug, and the first house was built beside it. The ice house was constructed in 1878, and it was during the associated excavation work that the Bronze Age origins of the mound were discovered.

Exterior

The chamber is approached via a straight passage which has stone external retaining walls and a brick arched ceiling.

Reasons for Listing
