Gyrn Castle was rebuilt by John Douglas in 1817-24 and was subsequently purchased by Sir Edward Bates, a Liverpool merchant and ship owner. North Lodge, with associated gateway, was built for Sir Edward Bates by Culshaw & Sumners, architects of Liverpool, in 1868.
A one-and-a-half-storey lodge in Teutonic Gothic style and of elongated octagonal plan, built of cyclopean rubble stone with freestone dressings, pyramidal slate roof with overhanging eaves and central coursed stone stack. The entrance is on the N side, now housed in an added porch but retaining a segmental-headed doorway and a boarded door. Above it is a gabled dormer projecting on wooden brackets, with 2-light mullioned window. A panel below the sill has 2 small raised roundels. On the R side of the entrance the first facet has a 2-light mullioned window. Between the second and third facets is a castellated segmental arch attached to the main gateway, but in cyclopean stone and built with the lodge. The longer side facet to the W side has single-light windows to the R and L ends, then another 2-light mullioned window in the next facet. The rear facet, facing the road to the N, has a dormer similar to the front, while the long side facet to the W has an added single-storey hipped-roof projection.

Listed as a fine Victorian lodge retaining early character, for group value with the gateway and other listed items associated with Gyrn Castle.
