Construction of Barry Docks begun in 1884, first opened to traffic July 1889. Engineer-in-charge was John Wolfe Barry, in partnership with H M Brunel; contractor T W Walker.
Dock basin circa 180m by 150m. Walls in large snecked blocks of squared reddish stone; granite coping, dressings, and treads to steps down to water. Slipway at SE corner. Entrance to No 1 dock to NW side has concave recesses for lock gates (modern replacements). Sea entrance has concave recesses for lock gates.(modern replacements). Return walls on seaward side in similar materials.
