Description

Initialled "AD", 1878. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan villa with service wing attached; subdivided. Squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings. Base, and 2 dividing band courses; bracketted eaves; corbelled stack; painted timber-faced gables.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central gabled timber porch on ashlar base with glazed tripartite 2-leaf foor, and glazed panels flanking and on returns; round-arched plate glass fanlight; corbelled advanced panel with single window and small decorative timber gable above. Tripartite windows in bay to outer left at ground, 1st floor, and large gabled dormer. 2 single windows at ground floor to outer right; corbelled chimney breast with initialled and dated tablet above.

S ELEVATION: full-height 5-light canted window to outer left, timber at 1st floor, bracketted to square gabled jettied dormer with tripartite window. Tripartite windows at ground and 1st floors; tripartite gabled dormer.

N ELEVATION: single-pitched roof timber extension to outer right; service wing to outer left; central tripartite window, breaking eaves in gablehead.

E ELEVATION: blank gable wall to outer left; secondary entrance at centre of remaining block; bipartite window at 1st floor to left; single windows in remaining bays.

Plate glass sash and case windows with fixed upper panes. Grey slate piended roof; box dormer to E; 4 corniced stacks (3 wallhead, 1 gablehead); moulded octagonal cans; moulded eaves guttering.

INTERIORS: not seen 1990.

Low saddleback wall to street, rising to coped rubble wall to St Thomas Road; garages to E and N.

Statement of Interest

The clapboarded dormers and canted bay sit uneasily on the villa but have a distinctive American flavour.

Statutory address revised in 2015. Previously listed as '19 St Thomas Road'.
