Following the completion of the South Bridge in 1788 (which provided the first direct link between the New Town and the Southside of Edinburgh) the Southside of Edinburgh expanded rapidly. Nicholson Street was extended to form Clerk Street in this period. Robert Brown laid out a scheme for the estate of Dr Hope extending along Clerk Street south of St Patrick's Square. Building on Rankeillor Street and Montague Street began in 1812. The completed scheme is visible on Wood's Plan of the City of Edinburgh dated 1831.
Listed building record and statutory address updated (2015). Previously listed as 'Rankeillor Street, 8-52'.
