Later 19th century. 7 spans of segmental fan design cast-iron railings on bullnose capped ashlar boundary walls stepping down to follow gradient incorporating gateway to E side and 2 pedestrian gateways to centre. Squared, pyramidal capped stone gatepost to W. Late 20th century vehicular gate and pedestrian gate to centre.
A rare surviving example of an ornate, unusual, highly decorative design of cast-iron railings belonging to the Quarter Primary School which makes a strong contribution to the streetscape of the heart of the village.
There are two other examples of this design known which are both in the West End of Glasgow, the more complete example of which is listed category C(S). This is the only known surviving example of a gate in this design and the railing's survival outside a major city is exceptional. The maker is not known but is likely to be one of the Glasgow foundries and the date is likely to be contemporary with the school itself which was built in 1877.
The boundary walls of the former paired schoolhouse are in the same design and it appears the removed railings would have been of the same design when built.
