1880. Free-standing granite drinking basin comprised of pointed-arch niche with roll-moulded arch and string course, inscribed frieze and scrolled ornament at apex, sheltering ogival basin with rope-moulding to rim.
B Group with Burnside, Craig Gowan, Craiglourigan Cottage, 1 Ivy Cottage, 1 and 2 Jubilee Cottages, Post Office Shop and Tigh-Na-Barr, Rhebreck and Rhebreck Water Tank.
The drinking basin lies to the south of Craig Gowan, flanking the slip road. The inscription dedicates the basin to General Sir Thomas Mydleton Biddulph KCBCP, born July 29 1809 and died September 28 1878, stating that it was erected by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in grateful and affectionate remembrance of his faithful service to the Queen and Royal family for 27 years. It is one of four drinking fountains to be found around the Castle, the others lying by the cricket ground, opposite the East Lodge, and in the sunken garden to west of Castle. J Thomson was paid £40 for work on the fountain between December 1879 and May 1880. The basin is well detailed and a further example of the quality of ancillary provision across the estate. Part of the group at Easter Balmoral.
