Description

Circa 1865, James MacLaren. 2-storey and attic, irregular-plan, Italianate villa. Stugged snecked and random rubble masonry, painted dressings, moulded ashlar stacks with uniform original cans, slate roof. Base course, moulded lintel course at S and W elevations; 2-and 4-pane sash case windows with corbelled cills and keystones, segmental- and round-arched architrave windows at 1st floor. Bracketted gable eaves.

S ELEVATION: entrance porch set-back in re-entrant at right; pier with star motif frieze, moulded entablature and scroll brackets; window set-back at 1st floor. Advanced main gable at left of door; canted window at ground floor, round-headed bipartite at 1st floor with pilastered jambs, squat octabonal gablehead stack. 2-bay section set-back at left; slightly advanced tripartite window at ground floor with bracketted segmental pediment to centre of light; 2 segmental windows at 1st floor breaking eaves with gabled dormerheads; small box dormer.

W ELEVATION: gabled bay at right with single and blocked window at ground floor, single window at 1st floor with angle pilasters, squat shouldered gable stack. Slightly advanced bipartite at ground floor left, window at 1st floor with gabled dormerhead.

E ELEVATION: entrance porch at left; gable at right with large segmental, leaded window at 1st floor. Lower single storey and attic wing at right with barred window; single storey piended projection at far right.

N ELEVATION: various single storey service projections; round-headed stair window to main house, arrow-slit attic window.

INTERIOR: panelled lobby with encaustic tile floor; cloakroom with dado and early Doulton basin; some foliate cornices, chimneypieces not original; well stair with mannered turned balusters, stair window with stained glass border glazing.

BOUNDARY WALL: stugged courser wall at S boundary 2 gatepiers of differing designs.
