Description

A random rubble early 19th century road bridge of 2 segmental arches with a central splay-topped cutwater and truncated curved wing walls. It is also of interest because of the remains of a concrete bridge, possibly a wartime structure, which stands next to the original bridge.

DESCRIPTION

The bridge forms part of the old road from Lochgoilhead to Carrick Castle, but is no longer in use as the road was diverted across a new bridge, just downstream, in the later 20th century. Immediately downstream of the rubble bridge, there are 3 round concrete piers on each side of the burn; it is likely that these are the remains of an interim bridge, possibly of erected during the Second World War, when increased traffic to the MOD post at Douglas Pier would have required a stronger, wider bridge.

The similarity of design of this bridge with the larger 2-arch bridge (circa 1810; see separate listing) over the river Goil at Lochgoilhead suggests that the two are roughly contemporary, and were perhaps erected as a single building project.
