Description

Earlier to mid 19th century. Short terrace of 4 (formerly 5) single storey and attic, rectangular-plan, cottages retaining traditional form, on corner site. Harled to S; squared and snecked and random rubble to N and W. Ashlar and squared rubble margins. Small openings to N; part-glazed modern timber doors.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION:

NOS 1, 2 AND 3: bays to centre and right with paired centre doors and windows in flanking bays with slate-hung polygonal dormers above; bays to left with door at right and blank bay to outer left, canted dormer window above extended into single light flat-roofed dormer, both with uPVC glazing.

NO 4: door to centre at ground, windows in flanking bays, and 2 slate-hung, polygonal-roofed dormers above.

N (CAMERON STREET) ELEVATION: Nos 1, 2 and 3 to right with 3 windows and 2 small modern rooflights; No 4 to outer left with 4 windows and 3 out-of-character large modern rooflights.

W (ARDUTHIE STREET) ELEVATION: gabled elevation with 2 windows and band course.

Largely 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in modern timber windows. Grey slates. Coped ashlar gablehead stacks and brick ridge stacks, all with cans. Ashlar-coped skews with flat skewputts to W.

INTERIOR: No 4 with timber fire surrounds and cast-iron grates. Nos 1, 2 and 3 not seen 2005.

ANCILLARY BUILDING AND BOUNDARY WALL: flat-coped rubble boundary wall to W with adjoining small, rectangular-plan, lean-to, rubble ancillary (former washhouse) with round-arched window and door to E.

Statement of Interest

Rare survival of little-altered traditional single storey cottages in Stonehaven's grid-iron plan New Town. Built as mill workers cottages, Ardley Terrace appears on the 1867 Ordnance Survey Map as five small cottages and is sited close to the separately listed South Church. The Arduthie Street elevation adds a suggestion of more polite architecture somewhat surprising on this otherwise simple vernacular row.
