Description

Later 19th century with later additions and alterations. Mirrored pairs of 2-storey, 2-bay houses. Squared and snecked tooled sandstone (lightly stugged); squared and snecked sandstone to side and rear elevations (except harled rear elevation to rear of No 47). Base course, stop-chamfered arrises to margins.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3 steps to 6-panelled timber door (modern glass door to No 49 with new dimensions and glazing to fanlight), to centre bays of each 4-bay group; plate glass fanlight above each; window (with lugged margins) at 1st floor above (painted bay at 1st floor in Nos 53, 55 and 57). Canted windows to outer bays, stepping out to square at 1st floor. Timber balustraded balcony to centre bays with intricate pierced pilaster screens to outer and centre, with pot and growing plant (Nos 55-57 have a different screen design).

E (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey addition to outer bays, brick with render to No 35, harl to No 37, 39 and others (not all seen fully, 1994).

Plate glass timber sash and case windows; replaced by modern windows at No 41, 49, 53. Grey slate M-roof to each paired group, Nos 35-57, with mansard to extreme outer of each pair. Intricate barge boarding to gables of outer bays (of a different design to Nos 55 and 57). Gablehead stacks to side elevations (ashlar with coping to No 35; render with coping to No 37, 39, 41, 43,45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55, 57). Ashlar wallheads to centre, rear elevations, mainly sandstone.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: sandstone with coping.

Statement of Interest

No 35 has a fine conservatory (contemporary, or thereabouts with the house itself). Nos 47 and 49, 53, 55-57 have been stone-cleaned.

No 55 was subdivided in 1955, as was No 57 in 1960. No 49 erected a garage in 1972. The listing includes No 57A Morton Street.
