Early 19th century. Single storey, 3-bay vernacular cottage with original openings. Whitewash/thin render over rubble and slate stone cills.
NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION:
Boarded timber door to centre with small widely-spaced deep-set windows in flanking bays.
SW ELEVATION: plain gabled elevation
SE (REAR) ELEVATION: tiny deep-set window close to eaves at outer left.
NE ELEVATION: blank gabled elevation, possible evidence of blocked window high up to right.
4-pane glazing pattern in timber casement (?) windows. Corrugated-iron over thatch (See Notes). Coped brick gablehead stacks
INTERIOR: timber-lined walls and fireplace.
Rare intact survival of fine vernacular structure. The unusual construction employing large amounts of slate is explained by the close proximity of the Southern Quarries of the Foudland Slate Quarries where slate was extracted directly from the hillside. Evidence of thatching (probably top dressed clay thatch common in later thatched buildings of the North East). Remnants of a thatched roof, probably straw over divots, can be seen between rafters and battens.
