Circa 1870, skew-arched former railway bridge over Water of Leith. Coursed, squared sandstone with sandstone ashlar dressings and soffit. Shaped cope stones; string course.
The skew-arch allows a bridge to be built at an angle to the river it is crossing. These bridges are technically difficult to build, both from the point view of the engineer and the stone mason, and this is a very good example. It was built as part of the Balerno Branch of the Caledonian Railway, which opened in Colinton in 1874. The bridge is now used as a footbridge for the Water of Leith Walk. It is situated in Coliton Dell, just of Gillespie Road, and near to Spylaw Farm. It spans the ward boundary between Colinton Ward and Baberton Ward.
