Circa 1925. War memorial comprising sandstone ashlar octagonal shaft on tapered rectangular-plan plinth and stepped base. Moulded base to shaft; ledge supported by scrolled brackets at apex; surmounted by crucifix and crown with flanking angels. Plinth chamfered at arrises; each of main faces with block pediment at apex and bronze panel set below; that to SE face inscribed with embossed letters: 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE TWO WORLD WARS '1914-1919 ' - '1939-1945'; names of deceased below and on other panels (that to SE replaced post 1945, those to other sides original). Dates of World War I and II on small panels at base of plinth to each side (World War I panels in stone; World War II panels in bronze).
Although modest in size, the Sauchie War Memorial is well-designed and well-executed. It shares similarities with designs for the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh, by R S Lorimer in collaboration with a number of sculptors (1924-1927), in particular the carved angels and the form of the column. Lorimer is known to have designed the South African war memorial (1904) and the World War I memorial in Bank Street, Alloa (1923-1924). See separate listing for the adjacent Sauchie Public Hall.
