A Marshall Mackenzie, 1912-14. 2-storey with attic, 5-bay, rectangular-plan, stripped Palladian-style villa. 3-bay central core flanked by advanced, outer bays with piended roofs. Harled granite. Base course, plain margins to openings.
S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 5-bay, 3-bay central block with door to centre, regular fenestration to flanking bays and upper storey. Inset stone plaques above upper storey windows. Advanced single storey colonnade to central bays with circular granite piers supporting a flat roof. Slightly advanced outer bays; large semicircular-arched windows to upper storey with cast-iron balconies. 2-storey, 2-bay plain addition in similar style to right.
N (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 2002.
E (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-storey and single storey outhouses and later additions abutting to rear with irregular fenestration.
W (SIDE) ELEVATION: not seen 2002.
8-pane, timber-framed, casement windows. Small gabled roof dormers. Grey slates, lead flashing. Ridge stacks.
INTERIOR: interior repartitioned as flats in 1970s except large entrance lobby to centre. Restoration work to interior in progress at time of listing 2002.
Built as A Marshall Mackenzie's own house ? an Edwardian villa of some style by the architect of Marischal College, Aberdeen (see separate listing) with croquet lawns, tennis courts and swimming pool overlooking the Howe of Cromar though all these garden features have been subsumed by modern forestry planting. The house originally featured a flat roof to the central bay which was pitched by Mackenzie's son.
