Description

Early 19th century. Monumental stone gateway of linear plan with quadrant ends. Low parapet wall, surmounted by 11 monumental obelisk gatepiers (4 to right side of central gate opening; 7 to left) on moulded pedestals with large ball finials. Original cast-iron railings missing; later chain-linked cast-iron posts now set between obelisks (2003).

Statement of Interest

A-Group with Fordell Castle (see separate listing). Highly formal gate entrance to Fordell Castle. Originally used as the main access to Fordell Castle, this route has been little used since the late 1990s. The mid 19th century Perth Lodge (alternatively called North Lodge) is located just beyond the gates to the N.
