Alexander Russell, Kirkcaldy, 1824. Shouldered and slightly bowed cast-iron milestone set into stone wall. Approximately 3' high and 2' broad. Inscribed in flowing script 'To Pettycur 32, New Inn 19, Cupar 10, Newport 1'. Painted white with raised black lettering and margins. Sited on the E side of the road, facing W.
The milestone shows distances in miles and was an indicator for passengers using the ferry service at Newport. The pier at Newport, which was improved by Thomas Telford in 1823, operated a busy ferry service to Dundee (see separate List for Newport Ferry Pier). This milestone notes Pettycur, which was also a ferry port and the staging post of New Inn. A similar milestone can be found adjacent to the ferry terminal building in Newport.
