Earlier 19th century. Range of 2-storey mews buildings in cobbled lane (2nd storey breaking wallhead as small gables); later conversion to garaging and private dwellings. Coursed squared rubble (some stugged) with droved dressings; long and short quoins. Pair of original segmental arched openings at ground floor to either side of central modern metal forestair leading to pedimented doorway breaking eaves. Glazed and timber garage doors to immediate right of forestair. Timber and metal doors to later openings to far right and left. 3 large rectangular dormer headed windows to right (W) at 1st floor breaking wallhead. Roughly regular fenestration at 1st floor.
Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows at 1st floor. Some glazed rooflights. Pitched roof with lead flashing and ridge; grey slates. Later brick wallhead stack. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
William Street NE Lane is characteristic of the mews buildings which were associated with Western New Town, and is a relatively early example, probably dating from the 1824 scheme by Robert Brown for William Street (see separate listing). Although there have been some later alterations, the original form of the building is still clear with wide carriage and stable openings to the ground floor with haylofts and grooms accommodation above.
