Earlier 19th century. Plain rectangular milestone. Tooled ashlar with carved Baskerville letters and numerals.
W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: adjacent to boundary wall with lowest row of writing partially concealed by low wall: reading Kilmarnock, directional arrow to right, 2 Furlongs 63 Yards; Grassyards, directional arrow to left, 4 ? miles 154 Yards.
This milestone is one of 3 used to mark the major routes out of town. The others are sited on Glasgow Road past Beansburn on the old toll road, and the other at the junction of Portland and Dundonald Road in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Church. None of the Kilmarnock milestones are of the same type or style. This milestone is sited at a public garden found adjacent to Number 18 London Road. Originally the milestone was at the other end of this site but No. 16 London Road was demolished and the garden created. The milestone points the way out of the north east of the town via Holehouse Road. Originally this road led to Grassyards, a farm near the Fenwick to Galston Road. Predominantly rural, the road was urbanised in the 1960's when the New Farm estate was built.
