Description

1936. Columnar pillar box with swept frieze to shallow-domed cap, dentilled at rim. Cast-iron. Base (painted black), shaft bearing "EVIIIR" in raised gothic lettering with crown above and "Post Office" below.

Statement of Interest

One of the few post boxes cast in the short reign of Edward VIII bearing his cipher "EVIIIR". A total of 271 letterboxes were made in 1936, 161 of which were pillar boxes. The Edward VIII post box is regarded as scarce, and this is the only example of its type in Kilmarnock. It is sited in Kay Park Terrace facing NW, near the junction with Kay Park Crescent. The post box was installed as part of the 1937 Coronation celebrations within the town. The main streets were decorated with bunting and flags but these were soon taken down, but the box remained.
