Description

1910. Drinking fountain. Polished grey and pink granite. Square plinth; scrolled base to shaft; corner pillars to shaft, framing triangular niches on all 4 faces; drinking basin on SE face; 4 pink granite columns above shaft supporting crowing cap; urn stands in centre of columns. Inscription on NE face reads: 'Presented to the town by the Kilmarnock Equitable Co-operative Society Ltd in Commemmoration of the Society's Jubilee October 1910'.

Statement of Interest

The Kilmarnock Equitable Co-operative Society was a prominent presence in 19th century Kilmarnock with over 5 premises in the town. The largest of these was the Central Premises, which occupied a site between John Dickie and John Finnie Streets (the building is now occupied by East Ayrshire Council). The ethos of community was very much at the core of the society's philosophy, symbolised in the emblem of the company: beehive above two clasped hands. Thus, the erection of a public drinking fountain on a green between four schools and the public musuem was highly appropriate.
