Description

George Cunnison, dated 1911. Single storey and attic, 3-bay Arts and Crafts style villa with fine interior. Harled with stone cills. Raised base course. Raised red sandstone ashlar long and short work voussoirs to wishbone-arched doorpiece. Timber mullions.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: centre bay under low-angled extension of gable pitch with panelled timber door, decoratively glazed pointed-arch fanlight and small shaped light to right, battered angle buttress beyond; dominant gabled bay to left with 4-light window under terracotta sundial and small horizontal tripartite with tiny semicircular raised-centre light in finialled gablehead; set-back bay to right of centre with tripartite window under low swept roof, and horizontal 4-light flat-roofed dormer window to centre above.

NW ELEVATION: broad gabled bay with small window to right in gablehead.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: large swept-roof porch with cast-iron column in re-entrant angle to left, part-glazed timber door with tripartite window to outer left of set-back face and 2 part-glazed boarded timber doors to outhouses on return to right. Small horizontal tripartite window to centre bay with large single window above in gablehead and further tripartite to outer right; flat-roofed tripartite dormer windows over outer bays.

SE ELEVATION: broad gabled elevation with small window to left in gablehead.

Fine leaded coloured glazing, with bullseye details, to casement windows except at ground NE and left at NW; 4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case window to NE gablehead. Grey/green slates with decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials. Harled stacks with oversized flat copes and full complement of terracotta cans. Mutuled bargeboarding. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative dated rainwater hopper.

INTERIOR: good original decorative scheme in place. Some decorative plasterwork cornicing; timber panelling; oak doors mostly with decorative door furniture and coloured glass top lights; built-in cupboards with decorative leaded and coloured glazing; oak dog-leg staircase with plain battered balusters and coped newels. Timber fire surrounds with tiled cheeks, some with overmantels and brass canopies. 2 principal bedrooms with built-in cupboards with decoratively-glazed doors.

ANCILLARY BUILDING: boarded timber, rectangular-plan ancillary with decorative pelmet to NE.

GATE: decorative ironwork gate with arch.

Statement of Interest

Retention of the formal garden layout with low box hedges to the front garden is a fine addition to this unusually intact Arts and Crafts villa. The architect, George Cunnison, was Burgh Surveyor of Blairgowrie.
