Description

1936. Edward VIII pillar type letter/ post box with later attached ironwork pouch. Columnar box with swept frieze to shallow-domed cap, dentilled at rim. Cast-iron. Base (painted black), shaft bearing "EVIIIR" in raised gothic lettering with crown above and "Post Office" below.

Statement of Interest

A rare unrecorded example of an Edward VIII pillar box of which only 161 were manufactured, many of which had their doors changed to display the George VI cipher.
