Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 4-bay villa. Aberdeen-bond granite with contrasting light grey long and short dressings, finely finished to margins; random rubble SW and SE elevations. Base course; chamfered cills; long and short quoins; eaves course.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; basket-arched doorway with chamfered reveals and ogee moulded lintel to ground floor of penultimate bay to right, panelled timber door with fanlight above, window to 1st floor, cusped trefoil lucarne to attic floor; 3-light canted bay through ground and 1st floors of bay to right, piended slate roof with decorative finial; penultimate bay to left advanced with deeply chamfered right angle, window to ground floor, gableted window breaking eaves to 1st floor, iron finial to apex; circular-plan angle tower to outer left, 3 windows to ground and 1st floors, conical roof with iron finial to apex.

SW ELEVATION: asymmetrical; gabled; flat-roofed addition to ground floor, opening to right.

SE ELEVATION: asymmetrical; substantial addition to ground floor; stair window to centre above, piend-roofed window breaking eaves to outer left at 1st floor; pair of piend-roofed dormers to attic floor.

NE (SALISBURY TERRACE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; window to ground floor of bay to left, gableted window breaking eaves to 1st floor, iron finial to apex; flue advanced through ground and 1st floors forming gablet below eaves (possibly ingleneuk), window to ground floor, blind shield set in gablet.

2-pane timber sash and case windows. Piended and gabled grey slate roof with lead ridges. Stone skews with moulded skewputts. Coped wallhead stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron and PVCu rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2001.

BOUNDARY WALLS: square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps to N, low coped boundary walls flanking to Salisbury Terrace and Great Western Road; high coped rubble walls to remainder.

Statement of Interest

One of the more unusually detailed and imposing villas on Great Western Road, prominently located. The survival of the curved glass in the windows of the tower, the iron finials and the gothic lucarne are all of particular note.
