Description

1853, incorporating earlier fabric; extended 1866. Triangular-plan single storey random rubble building with ashlar dressings. Timber boarded door in roll-moulded round-arched surround to right, with large gun-loop to outer right and small window in round-arched surround to left. Remains of 19th century inner barrier, with spur stones, to centre. Later flat-arched entrance, with spur stones, to left.

Shouldered wallhead stack with circular can to centre.

INTERIOR: substantially altered 1989 to accommodate shop.

The A Group comprises Batteries, Foog's Gate, Gatehouse, Governor's House, Great Hall, Lang Stairs, Military Prison, National War Museum, New Barracks, Old Guardhouse, Palace Block, Portcullis Gate, St Margaret's Chapel, Scottish National War Memorial, Telephone Kiosks, United Services Museum and Vaults, all within Edinburgh Castle, and in the Care of Historic Scotland.
