Dugal Campbell, 1740-2. 2-storey, attic and basement, 5-bay central section with 3-bay flanking wings. Random rubble with polished dressings. Regularly fenestrated. Centre block: dividing bands between basement and ground floors and at eaves; deep coped rubble parapet; channelled pilaster strips to outer right and left; timber-panelled door in pedimented porch with round-arched entrance to centre with stone steps and platts over-arching basement area; raised keyblocks to windows; pedimented dormers to attic. Cast-iron railings on low ashlar-coped wall to basement area.
12 pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Stone skews, those to centre block massively stepped. Tall ashlar-coped stacks.
The A Group comprises Batteries, Foog's Gate, Gatehouse, Governor's House, Great Hall, Lang Stairs, Military Prison, National War Museum, New Barracks, Old Guardhouse, Palace Block, Portcullis Gate, St Margaret's Chapel, Scottish National War Memorial, Telephone Kiosks, United Services Museum and Vaults, all within Edinburgh Castle, and in the Care of Historic Scotland. A good example of mid 18th century Board of Ordnance design. The centre block was the Governor's house, with wings for the Master Gunner and Storekeeper.
