James Craig Barr and Cook, 1906, subdivided and extended 1946. Rambling 2-storey gabled house in fusion of traditional Scottish and modern elements, 2 stage parapetted tower and flat-roofed circular tower. Harled with sandstone ashlar doorcase. Harled transoms and mullions.
E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: gabled bay to right with heavy classical doorcase of keystoned broken apex pediment and mutuled cornice surmounted by 6-light
transomed window and small gablehead, slightly set-back stepped bay to left with single window close to centre and rising into dominant stack. Later bay to right with flat-roofed stair tower beyond.
S ELEVATION: broad gabled outer bays that to right with 5-light canted window below tripartite, dominant gablehead stack to left and tripartite window in segmental arch to centre with horizontal window abutting eaves at 1st floor. Flat-roofed angle tower to outer left with 4 windows to each floor.
W ELEVATION: broad centre bay with 2 large windows grouped to left at ground below row of 6 small lights close to eaves above, angle tower (see above) to outer right. Gable to left with projecting single storey wing with window to right return, further windows to ground and 1st floor of 2-storey right return.
N ELEVATION: variety of elements to altered elevation including advanced gable off-centre right and further gable set back to left with single window at ground, low parapetted tower in re-entrant with 2 arrowslit-type lights to each floor at N and E, timber door in later semicircular stair tower to outer left.
Variety of glazing patterns in timber sash and case and casement windows; transomed window to E with figurative coloured glass and Art Nouveau style coloured glass to later stair tower at N. Grey slates. Cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with cans; ashlar-coped skews.
INTERIOR: not inspected 2001.
ANCILLARY STRUCTURE: harled and slated gambrel-roofed ancillary. E elevation with garage-type 2-leaf boarded timber doors and set-back bay with 15-pane glazing pattern to timber sash and case window.
GARDEN WALL AND GATE: squared rubble garden wall with inset carved stone; decorative ironwork gate.
Built for William Barr but occupied by his brother, the architect James Craig Barr, until his death in 1944. James Craig Barr was apprenticed to T G Abercrombie at the Glasgow School of Art during 1898-9. He also designed nearby 'Lismore' at 29 Thornly Park Avenue and 'Foxburn' at 17 South Avenue.
