Description

Mid 19th century. U-plan stable block; central carriage archway with raised pigeon loft. Rendered rubble; raised surrounds to openings and at arrises.

N RANGE: central arched entranceway; keystone; upper storey pigeon loft; central triangular opening; 5 flight holes below; flight ledges. Flanking arched openings to coach houses; keystones; single door to far right; double door to far left with keystone. 4 square windows centred above ground floor doors. Further windows to rear.

W RANGE: window to far left; door to right flank. 2 replacement sliding doors block further openings; window to far right. No upper storey windows. Replacement greenhouse to W range gable with low surrounding wall and decorative iron railings.

E RANGE: door to far left; central door with flanking window to right. Stepping block to right; window to right; door to far right; flanking window to right. 3 1st floor loft openings with shutters. Exposed rubble stone to rear; 2 1st floor windows to left; 2 rooflights.

Timber plank doors; fixed glazing and some timber sash and case windows. Central piended roof with over-hanging eaves to pigeon loft; piended at corners; pitched at gables; slate. 2 coped ridge stacks to N range; 1 to E range; gable end stack to E range, S gable; circular cans. Stone paviers and flags partially remain in courtyard.

INTERIOR: not seen, 2000.

WALLED GARDEN

Tall rubble stone wall extends from each end of E stable range and runs eastwards, enclosing the garden.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with Colton House which is situated to the S. The stables and walled garden are probably contemporary with the former Colton House. The previous house was situated where the present one now stands. The greenhouse attached to the W range is not part of the Statutory List.
