Description

Late 18th century. Rectangular walled garden; tooled sandstone lower walls, brick upper walls, flat stone copes. Single storey lean-to gardener's cottage; harled and painted rubble.

COTTAGE: W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: entrance door off centre right (now contained within modern sunroom), small square window to right, bipartite window to far left and right flanks; small ashlar chimney stacks, projecting neck copes, replacement single can; adjoining new bungalow to S ELEVATION.

N ELEVATION: blank half gable.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: right hand side: small door to right, window to left; left hand side: now within new structure.

4-pane timber sash and case windows. Lean-to slate roof on original cottage. Replacement rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: thick stone walls, lower ceilings, smaller deeper, windows than newer part of property.

WALLED GARDEN: W (NOW PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: high brick and stone wall: small wooden door to left, ashlar surrounds, old metal door furniture; new wrought-iron entrance gate to right, replacement stone wall adjoining older cottage.

N ELEVATION: high brick and stone wall, flat ashlar copes.

E ELEVATION: high brick wall, stone copes; modern sliding metal gate to off centre left.

S ELEVATION: rubble wall, stone copes; partially demolished at W end to make way for modern bungalow.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with Costerton House Ice House and Dovecot. The gardener's cottage now adjoins a modern bungalow built from stone reclaimed from the demolished Costerton House, of which there is little information. The new house has been constructed around the older structure, which was designed by a church architect and is found in the SW corner of the original walled garden. It has been harled and painted white to retain the character of the old cottage. The walled garden contains many espalier fruit trees, mostly apple and pear and a good number of shaped yew trees. The walls are purposefully built of both brick and stone. The stone at the bottom of the wall keeps lower portions of the plant/tree cooler, whilst the brick at the top reaches a higher temperature and encourages the growth of the fruit. To the E of the garden, there are still a number of specimen trees from the planned landscape of the mansion. To the N of the garden can be found the original driveway to Costerton House, with the trees still lining the track. The dovecot and icehouse from the estate still exist and are listed separately.
