Description

Mid 19th century, extended later 19th century. 2-storey and attic L-plan house (now 2 properties) comprising original rectangular block to SE and later NW wing with tower to re-entrant angle; built into slope in ground with access at ground and 1st floor levels. Coursed snecked whinstone with droved sandstone ashlar dressings. Eaves band continuing as string course across gables to original block. Vertical margins at arrises adjoined by flanking alternate blocks. Coped gables. Architraved windows with flanking alternate blocks.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: symmetrical arrangement. Central 1st floor entrance (at ground level on this side) with flanking pilasters surmounted by plain architrave with moulded cornice; 4-panel timber door with rectangular fanlight. Flanking windows each with later 19th century slated gabled dormer above.

NE ELEVATION: gable end of original block to left. Entrance (possibly inserted) with rendered architrave to right of centre; 4-panel timber door with 3-pane rectangular fanlight. Window to right; inserted garage entrance with rendered architrave to left. 2 windows to 1st floor; small window to gable above. 2 regularly-fenestrated bays to later wing to right; slated gabled dormers to attic.

SW ELEVATION: architraved entrance with narrow flanking lights to 1st floor of tower (at ground level on this side) to re-entrant angle at junction of 2 wings. Tall window above. Gable end of original block projects forward to right; 2 windows to 1st floor; 2 windows (as basement) below; small window to gable. Single bay set back to NW wing to left of tower; 1st floor window and ground floor window (as basement below).

NW ELEVATION: gable end of NW wing adjoins No 30 E High Street; attic window to right of gable. Blank elevation to tower set back to right; SE block projects slightly to right beyond it.

Mainly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs; that to tower is piended, swept at eaves and surmounted by brattishing. Flanking coursed whinstone gablehead stacks with quoins; that to NE has been lowered; that to SW has moulded ashlar coping; octagonal cans.

TERRACE WALL AND RAILINGS: whinstone rubble wall with rounded sandstone coping bounds terrace to E of house on N and E sides; coping surmounted by cast iron railings with stylised floral finials. 2 entrances with rendered architraves (possibly inserted) to N side; that to W probably contains store room built into terrace; that to E has keystone bearing cast iron figure of lion rampant bearing dagger and fleur de lys surmounted on coronet (adapted from coat of arms of Maitland family/Dukes of Lauderdale); entrance gives onto flight of steps leading up to top of terrace/principal entrance.

Statement of Interest

A substantial and finely detailed house with main access at first floor level. It is said to have been the residence of the factors of the Maitland family of Thirlestane Castle, which would explain its relatively high status and the existence of a symbol from the Maitlands' coat of arms over the entranceway to the main entrance. The road running adjacent to the house to the SE is called Factor's Park.
