Description

Later 19th century. Single storey and attic with 2-storey block adjoining to W. Coursed Aberdeen bond granite rubble, finely finished to margins. Base course; chamfered cills; eaves course.

NW (KING'S GATE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 9-bay; 2-storey, 2-bay near-square-plan block to right, regular fenestration to each bay of ground and 1st floors, gableted louvred ventilator to centre of roof. 3-bay block flanking to left, doorway to centre bay, replacement door with letterbox fanlight, gableted window breaking eaves to attic floor, iron finial to apex, single windows to ground floor of flanking bays to left and right, small skylights to attic. 2 gabled bays flanking to left, single window to each, narrow opening set in gablehead, kneelered gable with iron finial to apex. Regular fenestration to 2 flanking bays to outer left.

SW ELEVATION: symmetrical; tripartite window to centre of ground floor, gableted tripartite window breaking eaves to 1st floor above. Iron brattishing to roof apex.

SE ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

NE ELEVATION: gabled bipartite window breaking eaves to centre, narrow opening set in gablehead; chamfered outer right angle. 20th century additions to outer left, predominantly not seen 2000.

Variety of timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridges. Coped stone skews with blocked skewputts. Coped stacks with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 pairs of granite ashlar square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps to King's Gate; rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

45 King's Gate is one of the earlier buildings at this end of Aberdeen. It was originally been built as a school. Features of note include the louvred ventilator and decorative ironwork.
