Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey and attic, 2-bay villa with Scots Baronial detailing. Tooled Aberdeen bond granite, finely finished to margins. Long and short quoins; eaves course; iron finals to gablets and tower.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; doorway to right of ground floor in segmental-arched hoodmould, panelled timber door reached by 2 stone steps, letterbox fanlight; gableted window breaking eaves to 1st floor above; flanking bay to left blank, advanced flue through ground and 1st floors breaking eaves, blind shield to centre. Circular-plan tower through ground and 1st floors of bay to outer left, 3 windows to ground and 1st floors, conical slate roof.

E ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 3-bay, window to left and right of ground floor, 2-light stair window between ground and 1st floors to centre, window breaking eaves to right of 1st floor; piend-roofed 2-light dormer to attic floor above.

N ELEVATION: gabled bay to left with piend-roofed single storey addition to ground floor; bay to right not seen 2000.

W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; tower to outer right (see above). Ground floor not seen 2000; piend-roofed window breaking eaves to right of 1st floor; gableted window breaking eaves to left.

Predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case windows. Piended grey and purple-grey slate roof with lead ridges. Coped granite gablehead and wallhead stacks with octagonal and circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 square-plan rough-faced granite gatepiers to S, with coped pyramidal caps; low coped granite walls flanking to left and right; brick coped rubble walls to E and W.

Statement of Interest

In the second half of the 19th century Aberdeen began to expand westwards following the introduction of the granite trade and the expansion of the harbour. The prominently situated No 2 Hamilton Place is a good example of type of 19th century villas which emerged at that time. The Scots Baronial style was much favoured, possibly following the example of Balmoral. Features of particular note are the angle tower, decorative gablets and ironwork.
