Description

George Truefitt, later 19th century. Single storey and attic, square-plan lodge with single storey wing L-plan wing. Rounded granite rubble with rough-faced long and short dressings. Rough-faced dividing band course. Finely finished granite eaves course; rope moulded eaves course to angle turret.

W ELEVATION: asymmetrical; triangular-plan oriel on decorative oversized bracket to centre of ground floor; corbelled turret to outer left angle with single window to attic floor.

S ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; bipartite window to ground and attic floors of bay to left; ground floor of bay to right obscured by 3-bay single storey wing, bay to outer right advanced with 3-light window, 3-light window to flanking bay to left, tripartite window to bay to left.

E ELEVATION: asymmetrical; 2-bay; outer left angle obscured by single storey wing, with 2-light window to right, glazed timber door to right return reached by 3 stone steps flanked by ball-finials to right; 2 windows to ground floor of main block, bipartite wallhead stack to centre of attic floor, flanked to right by single dormer window and to left by bipartite dormer window, both piend-roofed breaking eaves.

N ELEVATION: asymmetrical; bipartite window to centre of ground floor; corbelled turret to outer right angle.

Predominantly 6-pane timber casement windows. Piended graded grey slate roofs with lead flashings. Coped granite rough-faced wallhead stacks to S and E with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

GATES, GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: coped, square plan granite gatepiers to N of lodge with pyramidal caps, 2-leaf decorative ironwork gates; rough-faced granite gatepiers and single leaf gate to NW leading to Garden House (see separate listing); coped rough-faced quadrant wall surmounted by ironwork railings to N and S; rounded granite rubble walls extend to N and S.

Statement of Interest

A-Group with Aboyne Castle, Mains of Aboyne, Home Farm, South Lodge, Walled Garden, Allach Bridge and Ice House. Typically eccentric designed by Glen Tanar Estate architect, George Truefitt.
