Description

F A Macdonald & Partners, Engineers, Glasgow and George Bennett Mitchell, architect; circa 1937. 7-segmental-arched, 3 hinged portal framed reinforced concrete bridge over River Dee. Principal arch spans 51.8m, single flood arch to N, 5 flood arches to S. Reinforced concrete abutments and piers; coped, pre-cast concrete block parapets.

Statement of Interest

Aboyne Bridge was built to replace a suspension bridge of 1832, which was no longer strong enough "to carry modern loads" (Road Bridges in Great Britain, p90), and had no footpaths. Due to the frequent, and often sudden flooding of the River Dee the bridge had to have as much clearance as possible, hence the 3 hinged portal frame, and the numerous flood arches. The design was by F A Macdonald and Partners (Glasgow), Limited, who consulted Mr M Heddle, County Road Surveyor and for the architectural treatment Messrs G. Bennet Mitchell and Son. The contractors were Stewarts Estates (Aberdeen), Limited (Road Bridges in Great Britain, p91).
