William Burn, 1822. 4-storey and basement 10-bay tenement block of 6 houses, with depressed-arched pend (cobbled) to centre (Bread Street Lane). Polished ashlar to ground, droved ashlar to basement, coursed rubble with ashlar dressings to 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors, random rubble to sides and rear.
SOUTH (EAST FOUNTAINBRIDGE) ELEVATION: dividing bands between basement and ground, and ground and 1st floors, cill course to 1st and 2nd, blocking course to eaves. Stone steps and platts over-arching basement area. Alternate doors and windows in ground floor bays; doors alternately arched and square-headed; 2-leaf timber panelled doors; 6-pane glazed fanlights over square-headed doors. Regular fenestration to upper floors.
RAILINGS: cast-iron railings to basement areas and stair platts, and grilles under some ground floor windows.
12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Corniced stone stacks with circular cans.
Burn provided plan and elevations for Major James Weir in 1822, where feuing had begun in 1810. A row of 6 houses of similar form does, however, appear on Kincaid's map of 1784 as 'Weir's Feu,' so these houses may perhaps incorporate earlier fabric.
